Activities

Richard Tatara, Activities Chairman
Thunderbird District Packs, Troops, Varsity Teams, and Crews:
The recent Klondike Derby was a success despite the lack of snow. We had approximately 175 Webelo participants. There were 8 "towns" staffed byBoy Scout troops, and good order was maintained by many volunteers including Venture crews, Order of Arrow, and other adults from the District Committee. We especially want to thank Stan Hungness for his excellent organization of the event. Thanks to everyone who brought a can of soup - we donated over 100 pounds of canned soup to Loaves & Fishes in Napervile. It was a very good day.
Our next activity is Scouting for Food. Scouts shouild be placing door hangars this weekend February 18, followed by pick-up on Saturday February 25. I want to thank Alpha Graphics in Lisle for providing the door hangars to us at no charge. Please consider them if you have printing needs since they have shown great support for Scouting. I will provide a report on the total amount of food collected for the area food pantries.
We have an exciting set of activities upcoming as we look forward to Spring. Here are some highlights:
Friday May 11 2012 - We will hold the annual Adult Recognition Dinner. This is a non-uniformed event designated for adult volunteers only. The program will feature a guest speaker (TBD - let me know if you have a suggested speaker) followed by recognition of volunteers at the unit and district level. Each unit is encouraged to designate one of their volunteers as a recipient of the special "Silver Acorn" award. District awards include the District Award of Merit and the "Spark Plug" awards. There will also be a door-prize raffle for live plants donated by the Morton Arboretum. The event will be held again this year at the Lisle Hilton. The committee examined several other venues in the area but found that the management of the Hilton has given the Scouts a really great rate that can't be beat. The approximate cost will be $35 per person and a cash bar will be available (final rate TBD). We hope to have the sign-up on-line this year and it should be available by March 1. This is always an up-lifting event and a great night of adult socialization.
Saturday May 19 2012 - Scout-a-rama will be held this year in coordination with Military Day at Cantigny Museum and Park in Wheaton. This is a one-day event that is guaranteed fun for Scouts of all ages. There will be many activities and lots of military equipment to examine. Look for a special article providing more details on the District and Council websites.
Saturday - Sunday June 2 & 3 - Webelos Overnight will be held at Greene Valley Forest preserve in Naperville. This is a great day of activities for Webelos Scouts that are staged by Boy Scout Troops. Webelos will have a chance to earn several activity pins and enjoy a night of camping with their parent and fellow Scouts. We plan to have the sign-up on-line again this year with registration starting in early March.
If you have any other events that you would like me to communicate to the units in our District, please send me an e-mail as shown below.
