TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Training Requirements

Thunderbird District is part of a Three Fires Council training pilot program.  By the end of each units charter term, it is required that Top Direct Contact Leaders, Cub Master, Scoutmaster, Venture Crew Adviser and Varsity Team Coach, be trained for their position.   In addition to that, 50% of the remaining registered leaders; including, members of committee, den leaders, pack trainers, assistant cub masters, and assistant scoutmasters, need also be trained for their positions.

All Units should have one person as the designated Trainer.  This person can keep track of training taken by all registered leaders within the unit.  Council generated reports indicating Leaders that require training will be sent to unit management and Trainers each month.

Please look into training options on the Three Fires Council website.  Courses are available online, in classroom settings in Thunderbird District and also out of District or Council.  Research the options to find which class opportunities fit in your schedule.  Do not wait to long, some courses are only offered a certain times a year.

THIS IS SCOUTING - BASIC TRAINING COURSE: Required for all leaders wishing to be basic leader trained. - "This is Scouting" was added to the BSA's Online Training on March 15, 2009. "This is Scouting" replaced New Leader Essentials as a required course for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing volunteers to earn the "Trained" leader emblem. All Scouters are encouraged to create a MyScouting account and access this training through the MyScouting portal, as credit for this training will be recorded in their training record upon completion. * Note: If you have already taken the former New Leaders Essentials course, it will still qualify for this general orientation segment of your basic training.

YOUTH PROTECTION UPDATE: Changes to the BSA’s Youth Protection Training Policies - Effective June 1, 2010 - Youth safety is the No. 1 concern of the BSA. To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies: Effective June 1, 2010: Youth Protection Training is required for all registered volunteers. New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before they submit their application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection Training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.

This training is designed to provide all leaders and volunteers with proper information to create the safest environment possible for the Scouts in our program. Online training for youth protection is available 24/7 and can be completed through the National BSA Online Learning Center— MyScouting. To find out more about the Youth Protection policies of the BSA and how to help Scouting keep your family safe, see the information available in any of the Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting handbooks, or go to Youth Protection at Scouting.org.
